"As unpredictable—and probably just as controversial—as UFOs, Leyak are a supernatural phenomenon most feared by many Indonesians."

Yassie (ヤッシー, 大和川のヤッシー)is a cryptid reported from the Yamato River flowing through Nara and Osaka prefectures in Japan. There is a cryptid of the same name reported from Lake Yamanaka.
Sightings[]
Somewhere before the year 2000, a pig carcass washed up on the banks of the Yamato River. The pig carcass was marked with inexplicable teeth marks. This led to the belief that the Yamato River might be inhabited by Yassie.
Since then, there have been multiple sightings and rumors that pictures have been taken, but the pictures are private, so we do not know if this is true.
On December 10, 2010, on the Japanese forum "2ch," an eyewitness summarized his sighting of the strange creature in the Yamato River in a few short words. He stated that he had witnessed the giant creature swimming in the Yamato River twice in the past, and that its swimming style was close to that of mammals. He stated that the size of the creature was only "1 to 3," but since the metric system is commonly used in Japan, this probably means that the total length of the creature was about 1 to 3 meters.
Explanations[]
Despite the fact that they are said to look like mammals, there are many who believe that their true identity is that of fish. Some people believe that the Yamato River used to be polluted and that this caused the mutation of flatfish, eels, catfish, etc. Cryptid researcher Bintaro Yamaguchi also mentioned that it might be a sweetfish, albeit jokingly.
The report that it swims in a mammalian manner makes it a popular theory that its true identity is that of a mammal. Others believe that Archaeoceti may be the true identity because of its large, long mouth, similar to the dentition left on pig carcasses, but this is not plausible. Given the proximity of the sighting to the ocean, it may have been a seal that had come up the river.
