"'Feejee Mermaid' has become the generic term for the many fake mermaids that can be found around the world..."
This article contains information relating to a hoax. According to Cambridge dictionary a hoax is "a plan to deceive a large group of people; a trick." |
The Wolpertinger also called Wolperdinger, Woiperdinger, or rarely Crisensus bavaricus is a creature said to inhabit the alpine forests of Bavaria, Germany.
Description[]
It has a body comprised of various animal parts - generally wings, antlers, tails and fangs, all attached to the body of a small mammal. The most widespread description is that of a horned rabbit or a horned squirrel. It is said the males have a poisonous bite.
Stuffed "Wolpertingers", composed of parts of actual stuffed animals, are often displayed in inns or sold to tourists as souvenirs in the animals' "native regions". The Deutsches Jagd- und Fischereimuseum in Munich, Germany features a permanent exhibit on the creature. But this creature is regarded, like its counterparts the Jackalope and Skvader, as a hoax.
In Popular Culture[]
The Wolpertinger vanity pet in World of Warcraft
The Wolpertinger appears in World of Warcraft as a vanity pet, only available during the game's Brewfest holiday, which occurs once a year between the real life dates of September 20 and October 6. For US servers, the pet can only be obtained by completing a specific quest, although on European servers instead players can simply purchase the pet at any point during the event. This pet is unique in that it can only be seen (when in use) by those who happen to be drunk, excluding the player themselves and any party/raid members they may have. This helps players in PVP situations as they can usually keep their vanity pet out of sight and remain relatively safe, since vanity pets tend to otherwise give players away.
