Sta

In Egyptian mythology, the Sta was described has having the head and neck of the extremely poisonous serpent known as an asp and a body which resembled that of a large cat like creature, though other quadrupeds have been substituted in place of a feline form. Like many other hybrid creatures in Egyptian mythology the Sta was looked upon as a form of god.

Explanations[]

Wadi Al-Hitan

One theory which has been suggested is that this creature may be based upon ancient descriptions of a large monitor like lizard. Some investigators have gone as far as suggesting that it may have been a now extinct species of long legged reptile, which may have evolved a more feline like form in order to better compete with other predators of the Nile River Basin. A small hand full of researchers have even suggested that the Sta may have been a small Sauropod, a form of four legged dinosaur.

A possible explanation is that the creature could have been inspired by fossils of the long necked archaeocete whale Basiliosaurus, which are found in the Wādī al-Ḥītān (Arabic: وادي الحيتان, lit. 'Wadi of the Whales') in Egypt.
