Smetty is an alleged lake monster seen in Lake Desmet in Northeastern Wyoming.

Lake Desmet[]

Lake Desmet is located between Buffalo and Sheridan Wyoming near Devil's Tower. The  lake is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 120 feet deep at max. This was before it was enlarged. The lake is named for Father Jean De Smet, a missionary who converted Native Americans.

Sightings[]

One of the first encounters with Smetty happened an unknown time ago. A Native American woman placed her baby in a papoose on the beach next to the lake.  The woman was skinning rabbits and wanted her baby to be in her view. Suddenly, a huge creature burst out of the water, seized the papoose and the baby and dragged it under devouring it.

In the early 1900s, ranchers by the lake noticed that the horses seemed to be scared. One of them had returned from safari in Africa and noticed it was the same behavior mammals in Africa showed near the river where crocodiles lived. In fact, it was described as resembling a crocodile with flippers.

In 1925, Edward Gillette wrote about an alleged sighting of a creature as long as a telephone pole (30-40 feet) with a huge bucket for a head. But with a horse like head coming out of the water.

The descriptions appear to match that of a prehistoric aquatic reptile from the Jurassic age, a Cryptoclidus, similar to Nessie of Scotland. Other theories include a Rhomaleosaurus or Kronosaurus.
