Sanriku Nessie

A sketch based on testimony

The Sanriku Nessie (三陸ネッシー) is a large carcass discovered in the sea off Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, in 1977. Despite its name, its features bear little resemblance to Nessie, but it was named due to similarities with the Zuiyo-Maru Creature (also known as New Nessie), discovered the same year.

Sanriku Nessie2

A sketch based on testimony

On August 29, a young man named Masayoshi Miura first discovered it. He found the carcass of a giant creature entangled in the ropes of a raft used for cultivating edible seaweed, located 1.5 kilometers (about 1 mile) offshore. He contacted his father, Kikuo Miura, and local fishing industry officials. Those notified launched a small boat to investigate the carcass up close. This carcass measured approximately 14 to 15 meters (about 50 feet) in total length, with a head spanning 1 meter, a body 4 meters long, and a tail 10 meters long. It floated upside down, its mouth revealing a pair of tusks about 45 centimeters (1.5 feet) long. Scavenging had already progressed significantly, exposing its internal organs and ribs.

The following day, August 30, it was transported to the beach over a period of two hours, where a detailed examination was conducted. According to the findings, it measured 12 to 13 meters in length. The part that appeared to be a tusk was actually the lower jaw with lost flesh. Investigation by ichthyologists revealed that this was not from a fish, but most likely from a whale.
