Ranyi

The Ranyi is a legendary creature from the ancient bestiaries of China. The Ranyi was a fish that had the ears of a horse mounted upon the head of a snake, and was said to be about six feet long. It lived in the lakes near the Yuan River of the Yingdi Mountain. It was believed that eating the Ranyi would prevent one from going blind and repel evil forces.

The image of the Ranyi is an original pen and ink drawing from a later edition of the Chinese book Through Mountains and Seas Guideways Through Mountains and Seas. The original scripture was complied during the Warring States period and the Western Han dynasty (4th century - 1st century B.C.E.).
