The Onbas is a mammalian cryptid with a lemur- or ape-like appearance, reported from Madagascar.
Description[]
It is described as being between 170 and 175 centimeters tall, with white skin, covered with hair all over, and wearing no clothing at all. It does not use language (some sources state that they do not know if they use language) and instead communicates with its own people by tapping on wood to make sounds.
The locals consider the Onbas to be a kind of human being. The locals would barter with the Onbas for honey. If the locals put food in containers and leave them near the river, the Onbas will come at night and exchange the food for honey.
Report[]
The cryptid was first reported in the summer of 1984. French ethnographer and filmmaker François-Xavier Peltier was in the forests of Madagascar with the local governor when he heard a strange sound, which the governor told him was Onbas communicating with each other. The governor says there are about a hundred of them inhabiting the area.
Explanations[]
Zoologist Tadaaki Imaizumi found that Onbas differ from large lemur species such as Indri that inhabit the area based on their skin color. Based on the Onbas's human-like features, he thought this might be a survivor of the Vazimba, an indigenous tribe thought to be extinct. He also analyzed the possible identity of the Onbas as a survivor of Megaladapis, a large, extinct lemur.
On the other hand, cryptid researcher Bintaro Yamaguchi considered the Onbas a close relative and survivor of Australopithecus. In his opinion, this is a larger-bodied species than the closely related Australopithecus.
