Sightings[]
In 1950, a coal mine worker captured a two-meter fish resembling a carp.
In 1966, a lake superintendent saw an unidentifiable giant fish.
In 1983, the manager of the lake succeeded in photographing a giant fish that appeared to be Namitaro. The fish was 4.5 meters (15 feet) long, swam in a manner similar to a grass carp, and there were three of them.
In 1989, the local municipality used Namitaro to organize a long-term event for tourism, and new sightings were made during this event. On this occasion, a giant fish with a dorsal fin of over 1 meter was photographed.
Explanations[]
It is believed that the carp was released by a local youth about 150 years ago, so it is said that its true identity may be a carp. However, carp do not usually grow that large; there is no record of larger members of the carp family, such as the grass carp, being released.
