Mermaids

Artist rendering from the description given of the Mud Mermaid. taken from the article (Mermaids, Giant Turtles, and Wild Men… Oh My!)

Mud Mermaids are Mermaid-like creatures commonly believed to have lived in the muddy banks of the Ohio River during the early 19th and 20th centuries. They were recounted in an 1839 Pennsylvania newspaper as being "about four feet high and covered with a light coat of chestnut-colored hair." They're also described as having a yellowish skin color and webbed feet at the end of their four limbs. Though different sightings report the creature having slightly different attributes they are always described as having vaguely humanoid and amphibious features. They are said to run and swim at high speeds and let out loud screeches and yelps when pursued.

Their diet is presumed to mainly consist of frogs and fish. In the past, they did not show any interest in attacking humans and have been reported as being easily startled and reclusive creatures. Their sharp teeth and claws may seem threatening but seem to primarily be used for catching fish and other small river animals.
