The Llul-llul (sometimes spelled Llull Llull) stands out as a terrifying and intelligent wekufe—a malevolent spirit. This creature is described as a gigantic, furry serpent with cat-like paws and a massive feline head, capable of both speech and manipulation.

According to legend, the Llul-llul lived near the sea and would threaten coastal communities with tsunamis unless offered sacrifices. Tragically, it preferred babies, demanding them as tribute to spare the villages from destruction. Its monstrous size made it capable of devouring fish in a single bite and even hunting sharks, emphasizing its dominance over land and sea.

Eventually, the people had enough. In a climactic act of resistance, they united under the guidance of warriors and machis (Mapuche shamans) to confront the beast. After a great battle, the Llul-llul was finally defeated and slain, freeing the region from its terror.[1] The Llul-llul likely originates from Mapuche coastal communities, especially those near rivers, lakes, and the Pacific coast of southern Chile. As with many Mapuche myths, it reflects a spiritual relationship with the land and water, where natural disasters (like tsunamis or floods) are interpreted as the work of supernatural beings.

  • The snake-like body ties it to traditional serpentine spirits in Mapuche lore, similar to the Kai-Kai Vilu (god of the sea).
  • The cat features—paws and head—add an unnatural twist, combining a predator known for agility and cunning with the monstrous scale of a sea serpent.
  • Its intelligence and speech make it not just a brute force of nature, but a manipulative and morally corrupt entity, capable of extortion and cruelty.
