The Linguin is a reptilian cryptid reported from Java, Indonesia.
Description[]
According to an 1899 newspaper report, Baron Pereira, consul-general for Austria-Hungary in Tunis, encountered and killed a strange creature in Java, Indonesia. Pereira was boating near the mouth of the Batavia river with a friend named Wetman and an escort of locals when they encountered a 10-foot-long creature with a head resembling a snake and a body resembling a crocodile. Upon seeing the creature, the local chaperone shouted "Linguin, linguin. Shoot, shoot!" Pereira and the boatman killed the creature with a gun and a scimitar.
Pereira tried to bring this organism back to Vienna, to send it there, but the climate and distance made that impossible. He tried again to find the organism to obtain a specimen, but was unable to do so.
Explanations[]
Newspaper articles have suggested that this organism is related to Ichthyosaurus, but this explanation is not plausible because Ichthyosaurus and this cryptid have very different characteristics.
A more plausible explanation is that it is an Asian water monitor or a similar species of monitor lizard. This can be up to 10 feet in length and also looks similar in appearance.
Skeptical Opinion[]
The creature is believed to have appeared at a place called the "Batavia river." Batavia is the name of a place that really existed at the time, but there is no record of the river being called the "Batavia river."
