Colico monster

Drawing of the creature

The Lake Colico Monster is a cryptid said to inhabit the waters of Lake Colico in southern Chile. Descriptions of the creature vary but consistently depict it as a large, aquatic, dinosaur-like animal - frequently described as a "snake with flippers" or a "giant anaconda with fins."

The first reports emerged in the 1970s, when local residents began claiming to see something strange moving through the lake's still waters. Over time, the legend faded - until a resurgence of sightings in the 2000s.

Notable Sightings[]

2004 - Emergency Call Panic

After over two decades of silence, the monster returned to public attention when locals reported seeing a "giant anaconda" in the lake. The sighting caused such alarm that both the police and local fire department were contacted. Witnesses believed it could have been an exotic escapee from a zoo, though no such animal was ever reported missing.

2014 - Raúl Pozas' Encounter

Argentinian tourist Raúl Pozas described a chilling sight while visiting Lake Colico. He warned others near the shore to get away, later telling local media:

"It had fins on its back with which it cut the water, forming waves. It was blackish in color that contrasted with the lake. It had brown spots on its back and its head was like that of a dinosaur."

2014 - Carolina López & the Godzilla Comparison On the same day, Carolina López, who was picnicking with her family near the lake, also spotted the creature. She described it as:

"At least 10 meters long, blackish with slight brown spots on its back. It had fins, but they were hard, not flexible—like the ones a dinosaur has on its tail or head. Like a monster from a movie... like Godzilla. It had no visible legs. The sighting was very brief."

Later that day, a group of Norwegian tourists also witnessed the creature and likened it to Godzilla, further adding to the mystery and growing international interest.

2025 - Recent Sighting

The most recent known sighting occurred in February 2025, when a group of tourists reported seeing the creature again. They described it as:

"So big that it caused waves as it moved."
