Kemza

Kemza is a monster believed to live in the Danube river near Smederevo in Serbia. Some describe the creature as a giant fish similar to a catfish while others describe it as similar to a man but with claws and a long tail. The only consistent thing between descriptions is that it is covered in moss and mud. Serbian historian dr. Leontije Pavlović wrote the following about Kemza: "He is lurking for the opportunity to drown someone, dragging fishermen and swimmers into whirlpools, where he entangles his victims with his tail, from which there is no escape." The origins of this legend are unknown but due to the Turkish origin of the creatures name it is assumed that it is sometime during the Ottoman rule over the region which lasted from 1459 to 1878. Today Kemza is still feared by many fisherman from Smederevo but the belief in him is quickly fading as there has been no sightings in a long time.
