Julia was a previously unknown sound recorded on March 1 1999 by NOAA on the eastern equatorial Pacific autonomous hydrophone array. Julia is thought to have originated between Bransfield Straits and Cape Adare. The sound is eerily reminiscent of a woman's voice underwater, hence the name.

Explanation[]

Similar to the Bloop sound, NOAA researchers say that Julia is most likely a large iceberg that had run aground off Antarctica.

Hoax[]

Misinformation spread online claims pictures taken from NASA's Apollo 33A5 show a large shadow in the water at the time the sound was recorded. These apparently classified pictures show the unknown shadow being 2x larger than the Empire State Building. However, no such NASA mission exists and their work is mostly unclassified.
