The Hairy Ape Human of Nankan(南関の毛むくじゃらの猿人間 )is an ape-like cryptid reported from Nankan Town, Tamana County, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

Reports[]

On July 26, 2023, a collector of folklore and yokai tales, who goes by the name Kyotenraku Sugabe, was provided with cryptid information by a person named Hiromaru Kifuneda.

He reported that his wife's mother told him a story about a "monkey-like man" that once appeared on a forested hillside near where Hotel Sekia is now located. His wife's mother told him a story about "a person who called out to someone in the mountains and the person turned around and saw it (the monkey-like man)" and "it was sitting in the middle of the parapet of a bridge with its legs dangling". There were also rumors regarding its origins. There had long been rumors of a hairy child born to a slaughterhouse family, and it was thought that the child might have grown up.

Based on the testimony of his wife's mother, Kifuneda estimated that the sighting occurred around 1950-1960, based on the approximate time period she mentioned. He believed that this sighting was not a hoax created to take advantage of the hibagon, since it occurred before the hibagon was sighted.

Upon receiving this report, Sugabe said he had not heard of such a story, but would pass along any cases he found that might be related.

Explanations[]

This cryptid could simply be a person with a special constitution, as this has been rumored. Even if the origin is not actually the birth of a hairy baby, we cannot rule out the possibility that it is a person living in the mountains for some reason.

On the other hand, in the Kyushu region where this was reported, there are reports of Bigfoot-type cryptids such as the Beastman of Tonkararin, the Giant Monkey of Park N, the Kumamoto Ape Footprints, and the Strange Beast of Kurate, so it may be closely related to these. It may be a related species.
