According to what Japanese cryptozoologist Bintaro Yamaguchi posted in his online column on July 26, 2010, he was at an event when a participant reported seeing a giant cicada.
According to this report, the reporting woman visited a graveyard in the summer when she was a child, where she saw a cicada of unusual size. Japanese tombs have trenches for pouring water (the size of each varies, but most are about 20 cm long), and this cicada was about the same size as this one.
The largest cicada seen in Honshu is Cryptotympana facialis, but it is only about 7 cm in length. The cicadas sighted were more than twice that size. However, since the sighting was made at an early age, it is possible that she simply saw a normal cicada and misjudged its size.
