The Gobi Bipedal Gecko or Gobi Gecko is a reptilian cryptid reported from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.

Sightings[]

Sometime between 1773 and 1777, a person named Yu Jin'ao was walking at night in the Shanshan region of the Gobi Desert when he was attacked by a bipedal reptile. It was about 3 meters (9.8 feet) long and looked like a gecko. Jin'ao fired back at the reptile with a bow and arrow that he was carrying. The first arrow he fired at the reptile was evaded, but the second arrow struck the gecko in the chest, killing it.

Explanations[]

Tarbosaurus

Juvenile Tarbosaurus skeleton

Because it is a bipedal lizard-like creature and because numerous dinosaur fossils have been found in the Gobi Desert, some people believe that the giant gecko that Jin'ao defeated may have been a theropod dinosaur. If we assume that this was a dinosaur, it was most likely a juvenile Tarbosaurus, given its size and appearance. However, due to drastic environmental changes and scarcity of food resources, there is little chance that these creatures survived. Also, some dinosaurs have been found to have feathers, but Jin'ao did not mention the presence or absence of feathers on the gecko.

From these perspectives, the idea that this cryptid was a dinosaur is not plausible. In the absence of any creature that looks like this, it is more likely that it was a hoax.
