The Giant Snake of Mt. Chōkai (鳥海山の大蛇) is a cryptid thought to occur in Mt. Chōkai, between Yamagata and Akita prefectures in Japan.

Sightings and Reports[]

According to the history book Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku(日本三代実録 ), completed in 901, when Mt. Chōkai erupted on May 1, 871, two 30-meter snakes and countless smaller snakes headed out to sea. This is believed to be a metaphorical expression for liquid mud or pyroclastic flow, but there have been multiple sightings of large snakes since then.

March 1, 1974. When Mt. Chokai erupted, climbers saw a 5-meter serpent at the time of the explosion.

Video uploaded to YouTube.

On June 9, 2009, a video about Giant Snake of Mt. Chōkai was uploaded to YouTube. This was a video of field research and interviews. The source of this footage has not yet been determined, although it is believed to be a recording of some television program. The poster stated that the video was a DVD mailed to him by an anonymous person, and he or she speculated that the video was shot on 16mm film around 1965-1975. The caption of the video also mentioned that this snake had been seen in the Edo period (1603-1868) and that a group of climbers had encountered a 5-meter snake in the early part of the Heisei period (which began in 1989).

Cryptid researcher Bintaro Yamaguchi stated that a climber saw a 5 meter snake in Heisei. This could be the sighting mentioned in the caption of the video, but he did not mention any details. He also stated that he had received information from an acquaintance doing research on Tsuchinoko that there is a 10-meter couple of giant snakes in Mt. Chōkai.

In addition, although the authenticity and details are unknown, personal blogs have posted stories of people they know who have seen anaconda-like snakes and that traces of snakes passing through are often found in August.
