In the book "Wakan Sansai Zue" published in 1712, two giant earthworms of 4.5 and 2.8 meters in length were reported to have appeared when there was a tremendous rainstorm and landslide in the area that is now Aogaki Town, Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture.
In 1887, a book titled "Kinse Kaikan Kibun" mentioned giant earthworms. According to the book, in the area that is now Koka Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, there are 1.5 meter earthworms, which are described as destroying the roots of crops and harming the fields.
Around 1969, a person named Oyamada was riding his bicycle along a path in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, with fields on both sides, when he saw a giant earthworm. When he almost hit it with his bicycle, he first thought it was a snake, but then realized it was an earthworm.It was about 1.5 meters long, about the same as the width of the road, and 2 centimeters thick.
Sometime in the 1960s or 1970s, in an area facing the Seto Inland Sea in Okayama Prefecture, a young girl saw a three-meter-long worm wriggling in her grandmother's field. This event was not reported until the early 2000s, when the girl was in her 40s.
Around 1996, in Mikata County, Hyogo Prefecture, a man named Shoichi Sakaguchi saw a giant earthworm in his mountain. He had planted a Japanese cypress tree and was cutting the surrounding weeds when he noticed a one-meter-long, two-centimeter-diameter earthworm on the ground.
At the same time, the wife of a man named Oyamada, who saw a giant earthworm in 1969, also saw a giant earthworm. The sighting took place near her home in Hachioji City, Tokyo. The earthworm was 2 meters long, blue in color, and had an appearance similar to a rubber hose.
Sometime between 1997 and 1998, Ouri Sato and a friend found a severed earthworm-like object in a forest in Fukuoka Prefecture. This report is detailed in a Minho−Taro article.
Around 2004, a person named Kanda, along with his grandmother and cousin, witnessed a giant earthworm in Yorii Town, Saitama Prefecture. They were playing on a road with few cars passing by when he found something that looked like a string on the road. At that time, a car passed by this road and ran over the string. Then the string jumped 40 centimeters with a fish-like movement. It was at this point that he realized that the creature was a worm 1.7 meters long and 2 centimeters thick.
