Ganaita

Ganaita (ガナイタ)is a fish introduced in a 19th century book as inhabiting Lake Biwa in Japan. However, these fish are not known scientifically and information can only be found in old books. For this reason, some people treat it as cryptid.

Ganaita depicted in the book figure has a protruding lower jaw and a single barbel extending from the snout area in addition to the paired barbels. According to the caption, it is 6 to 18 cm long, has no scales on its entire body, and has venomous spines with which it stabs people.

While some have suggested that this fish may be Pelteobagrus nudiceps, the book in which Ganaita is presented introduces Pelteobagrus nudiceps separately from this. However, although Pelteobagrus nudiceps is also distributed in Lake Biwa, the book did not mention Lake Biwa in its habitat, so it is possible that Pelteobagrus nudiceps in Lake Biwa was called Ganaita to distinguish it.
