The Formosan clouded leopard (台灣雲豹) was a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) population that was endemic to Taiwan. It was officially declared extinct in 2013 after its last confirmed sighting in 1983, but unconfirmed sightings by local rangers in Taiwan since 2018 have sparked hope that it may not be truly gone, though its continued existence remains unverified by the IUCN. Since 2018, local rangers in southeastern Taiwan have reported sightings, describing the leopard climbing trees and avoiding people. While rangers' accounts are from experienced individuals, there is no photographic or other verifiable scientific evidence to confirm these sightings. The leopard holds deep cultural importance for Indigenous communities, such as the Bunun people, who consider it a sacred guardian.
