A Fomorian from the Forgotten Realms fantasy universe

A Fomorian from the Forgotten Realms fantasy universe

Fomorians are large, ugly hostile creatures similar to Trolls, Ogres, Giants, Hiisi and Peikko.

Description[]

They originate from Irish folklore. Originally the Fomorians seem to have been regarded as malevolent creatures dwelling underwater and in the nether regions of the earth. In one of the earliest references to them, a probably 7th Century elegy for Mess-Telmann, they are said to dwell "under the worlds of men". Sometimes they are said to have the body of a man and the head of a goat, according to an 11th Century text in Lebor na hUidre (the Book of the Dun Cow), or to have had one eye, one arm and one leg. According to one of the most popular myths about them, the Fomorians were the original inhabitants of Ireland, but humans fought and defeated them.

In Popular Culture[]

  • They were the inspiration behind the controversial Fimir race in the Warhammer fantasy universe, which was removed from the lore because Fimir reproduced via capturing and raping human women, something the Warhammer creators wanted to remove as the game became geared more towards general audiences.
  • They appear in the Forgotten Realms fantasy universe.
