Echigo Mothman is a winged cryptid reported from Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Name means Mothman of Niigata Prefecture.（Echigo is an old name for Niigata Prefecture.）
The cryptid became known from a report posted by a reader of a Japanese blog called CRYPTO.
A junior high school student was riding his bicycle to school when he noticed a strange creature flying from north to south in the western sky. It looked like a very large bird, but it had no head and was very stoutly built. Based on its features, he thought it could be a heron or an owl, but none of those images matched what he saw.
The CRYPTO blogger said that several cryptids like mothman have been reported in Japan, and that this is one such case.
In addition to this case, two other similar cryptids, Fukushima Mothman and Kyoto Mothman, have been reported in Japan.
