The Duphon is an avian creature found in the Hautes-Alpes region of France, where it is said to braid horses' manes, pinch young women, and cause mischief and mayhem. The town of Serres preserves a duphon lair in the form of a stone door and ruined ramparts, known as the Trou du Duphon (“The Duphon’s Hole”). The first recorded sighting of the Duphon was in 1820 by French baron Jean Charles François de Ladoucette in his work Histoire, antiquités, usages, dialectes des Hautes-Alpes.

Eagle-owl

It is believed that Duphons were inspired by local populations of Eagle Owls in the Eurasian area. It is one of the largest species of owl, and it is likely that its grand size lead to French locals creating a supernatural mythos around its presence.
