The drekavac (yeller, drek, drekalo) is a creature from South Slavic mythology. They are said to come from the souls of unbaptised children who have died. Some say the only way to kill it or lay it to peace is to give it a proper baptism. It is usually heard and seen at night in a graveyard during the twelve days of Christmas or early spring. There are a few forms of this creature, including a bird, a fox, and a skinny baby with a large head. The animal forms supposedly bring cattle disease and the baby form predicts a misfortune. This creature is described as being about one meter tall and having a horrifying scream. It screams for someone to baptize it. The drekavac is afraid of dogs and it dislikes sunlight; this is why it only screams in fog or at night. Generally, it is seen as a lonely creature but tales have been told where there were packs of drekavacs. In rural Slavic communities the drekavac is also called the "bogeyman" to scare children into acting well. There have hardly been any modern encounters with the drekavac, but some people claim to have seen and heard them. Some adults even say they have bodies of this creature! The drekavac could be a species of a loud monkey (the "baby") or an actual fox or large bird. This creature is similar to the ghoul in some accounts.
