El Chime (or Toro Chime) is a mythological creature from Chilean folklore, particularly known in rural riverine regions. It is described as a large black bull that dwells at the bottom of rivers, surfacing only on rare occasions to feed or mate.

According to tradition, when El Chime mates with a cow, the pregnancy goes undetected. The cow will give birth only when taken to the river to drink or bathe, as if the connection to the river itself completes the strange gestation.

El Chime is more than just a creature — it is considered the protector of river animals. It violently attacks those who disturb the river’s harmony, such as humans who pollute, overfish, or harm aquatic creatures. Its presence is so feared that even other mythological beings, like the Guirivilo, are said to avoid rivers where El Chime resides.

When provoked, El Chime can unleash natural chaos: its powerful moos are believed to summon whirlpools, whirlwinds, and even small tornadoes. In combat, it attacks like a normal bull — but with far greater force and fury, using its massive horns to drive off intruders.
