Description[]
The Chilean blob was a large mass of tissue that weighed 13 tons and measured 12 meters across. Initially, scientists were unable to identify it. Theories included it being a giant octopus previously unknown to science. [1]
Explanation[]
In June of 2004, DNA from the Chilean blob was found to be that of a sperm whale. The blob that washed ashore was the decomposed remains of the blubber layer. [2]
