A collage of several primate species, including the gelada, orangutan, chimpanzee and gorilla.
Primates are mammals characterized by forward-facing eyes, a high degree of shoulder mobility, grasping limbs, nails, and an upright torso. Primates evolved shortly after the extinction of the dinosaurs, in the Paleocene era, and diversified into two main groups: the strepsirrhines and the haplorhines.
Primates who lack tails may be more specifically categorized as Apes, the group which includes the Hominids.
In cryptozoology, there are many primates that are unknown to science, but are still reported. Some of the most notable are Bigfoot and Yeti.
