From the mid 20th century and earlier, the European popular perception of Africa painted it as an inhospitable and untouched continent, home to primitive humans and also primitive animals. These preconceived notions helped bolster rumors of cryptids that resemble extinct dinosaurs living in Africa, particularly central Africa. These rumors were further kept alive in the 21st century after several trips were made to central Africa by Young Earth Creationists hoping to use proof of living dinosaurs to help disprove evolution.
This category is specifically for cryptids that fill the "African dinosaur" trope, and is not a general species tag (birds should not be tagged here). Pterosaurs and extinct mammals may also fall under this trope.
