The canal monster is a supposed serpent-like creature living in the Erie Canal, in New York State. It's thought that the Monster likes to eat small children and pets, which it grabs right off the decks of passing boats. However there have been no reported cases of this happening. This rare sighting occurred June 2006 about 100 yards east of a concrete pier at buoy G-743 on the south bank near the Wide Waters and Port Gibson on the western canal. Sightings have also been seen along the canal, including locations from Rochester through Albany. [1]
It is also possible that the canal monster is an out-of-place giant snake, as in 1910, a large, snake-like creature was seen under a boat in the canal. It was somewhere between 20-30 feet long.[2]
Graffiti warning of the canal monster
It is widely believed that the Canal Monster is a hoax, and that the sighting was likely fabricated, or was just a sturgeon, which are uncommon, however do appear occasionally along the canal. It is also possible the canal monster may be a long stick seen floating in the water.
