"'Feejee Mermaid' has become the generic term for the many fake mermaids that can be found around the world..."
This article contains information relating to a hoax. According to Cambridge dictionary a hoax is "a plan to deceive a large group of people; a trick." |
The Black Sea Giant Snake is a marine cryptid said to have been spotted in the Black Sea. Despite this fact, information is known only from Japanese books and web pages based on them.
Description[]
Sometime before 1989, 12 (some sources claim 13) marine biologists from the USSR Academy of Sciences, including Dr. Ivan Silcoff and Dr. Aleksei Golubev, conducted a three-month survey of the Black Sea using a submarine named Academic Shirshov. During this survey, three times in 12 days, a mysterious, scientifically undiscovered giant snake was observed from the Academic Shirshov at a depth of around 300 meters.
During the third encounter, the snake lunged straight at the submarine Academic Shirshov, violently striking its head against the hull and attacking. Dr. Silcoff observed it through the submarine window and found that the snake had a head three meters in diameter, similar to a cobra, and very long fangs in a shape similar to a cobra. Some sources say that it was Golubev, not Silcoff, who observed this feature.
The snake was also recorded on the sonar equipment of the research vessel, and according to the sonar information it was around 50 meters long. It was also described as having been photographed, but this has not been made public.
One Japanese book described it as "a giant sea snake that lived millions of years before the prosperity of the dinosaurs and was thought to have appeared in front of a Soviet submarine," a description that is contrary to modern scientific knowledge of snakes.
The names of the people and submarines in this story cannot be found in a search, except for this sea snake story, and the existence of the group of witnesses, let alone a giant snake, is considered suspicious. The most popular theory is that this is a hoax story created in Japan for a book.
