Original report
Bissie is an aquatic cryptid reported from Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan.
Description[]
On April 1, 2004, a person posted on a cryptid enthusiast's exchange site the story of the Lake Biwa monster as told to him by his father. His father told the reporter that he had been with several friends and had seen a giant snake-like creature crawl ashore from Lake Biwa. Others on the exchange site named the creature Bissie, after Lake Biwa.
Since the day the report was posted was April Fool's Day, this could simply have been the reporter's idea of a joke. Even if it was not, the father may have created and told the reporter the cryptid story as a joke. Another blog reported that someone saw a creature resembling a plesiosaur in Lake Biwa in 2016, but the source is unknown.
According to cryptozoologist Bintaro Yamaguchi, in February 2024, a person reported seeing a giant snake-like creature near Lake Biwa more than 10 years ago. The person who reported the sighting to Yamaguchi was a person who was interviewing cryptid witnesses in the area. According to the interviewer, the woman who reported the sighting saw waves on the surface of the river that empties into Lake Biwa (presumably the River Uso). Although she could not clearly see the entities causing the waves, she said they appeared to be two snakes about 10 to 15 meters long.
In September 2024, the same interviewer who had provided information to Yamaguchi in February provided him again with new testimony. A fisherman in the northern part of Lake Biwa testified that about 15 years ago, he caught a huge (40 centimeter long) scale with his fishhook.
