The Basan (波山), Basabasa (婆娑婆娑), or Inuhōō (犬鳳凰) is a mythical creature from Japanese folklore. It is described as a gigantic chicken with ability to breathe fire; the fire itself is cold and doesn't burn. When the Basan flaps its wings, an eerie rustling ("basabasa") sound can be heard. Supposedly, if a human hears the sound and looks outside, the bird's form will suddenly vanish. This creature was said to live in the bamboo forests within the mountains of the Iyo Province (today Ehime Prefecture).
