Azzo1

A photo of Azzo

Azzo Bassou was a man living in Marrakech in Morocco, who was naively portrayed by the press as an apeman or a surviving Neanderthal.

Description[]

Azzo was discovered in 1931. According to locals, Azzo lived in a cave and ate raw meat, walking around without any clothing and using basic tools; his forehead was sunken and he had a large nose and unnaturally long arms that reached almost to his knees.

Azzo described as an apeman

Azzo was called the missing link between humans and apes, an apeman, and was said to be the last living Neanderthal.

Azzo was mentioned the first chapter of Bernard Heuvelmans' On the Track of Unknown Animals as a prime example of a hoax cryptid made for cheap sensation that lowers the people's trust and belief in people reporting encounters with actual unknown animals, next to a deformed whale. Bernard judged Azzo to simply be a man suffering from microcephaly, something that was later confirmed by scientists.
