According to the book Sankai（山怪）, a collection of strange stories about mountains published in 2015, there have been sightings of lion-like creatures in northern Akita Prefecture.
One day in the early 1990s, a hunter was hunting in the snowy mountains of northern Akita Prefecture when he spotted a large creature down a slope. It was a lion-like creature, and it was in a crawling position watching him. He raised his gun at the beast, but it was loaded with shotgun shells intended for hunting rabbits, and realizing that he would not be able to kill this large beast, he slowly retreated and hurried to his companions.
Since the 1970s, there has been a series of sightings of lion-like creatures in western Japan, but Akita Prefecture is located in the northern part of Honshu, which is very different from other examples.
