The African capybara is a cryptid from the Congo described as a "forest pig". It was first reported by explorer H.M. Stanley while hunting for the Okapi.[1]

At one time I shot an animal the size and appearance of a six months old pig, and yet an undoubted rodent. I never described it in my books, because I had no means of proving its existence in Central Africa, and according to the scientists it is found in Central America and nowhere else.

Presumably this refers to the capybara, a species of rodent that resembles a pig that's only known from Central and South America.
